The Adolescent Care Program at Women’s Wellness of New Jersey was developed to bridge the gap between pediatric care and adult well-woman care. We provide care for the young woman between the ages of 13 and 17, normal annual exam with a component of well-woman care that is appropriate to her age and maturity. This visit also qualifies for all school/sports required physicals.
What to Expect during the Adolescent Care Visit
During the visit, general health will be reviewed, a detailed health history will be elicited and we will then focus on her health as a young woman.
The physical exam is a standard check of height, weight, heart, lungs, abdomen, spinal alignment, and reflexes, with eye and ear exam as necessary, and will only include a pelvic/gyn exam if the young woman is sexually active or has a complaint that requires it. We strive to perform the most comfortable pelvic exam possible with all of our clients. The providers at Women’s Wellness of New Jersey are interested in developing a life-long relationship with our clients starting from their teen years. We believe that by becoming her healthcare provider in adolescence, we can be a positive influence on a young girl’s health throughout her lifetime.
Plenty of time is allowed during the Adolescent Care visit to discuss common changes in a young woman’s body and how to cope the most difficult ones like with body odor, acne, breast growth, and weight gain.
During the visit we will also discuss the onset of menstrual period, why a young woman’s cycles may be irregular, heavy or not “normal”. We can explain the wide variations of menses that she sees among the other young women her age. We believe every woman should understand her menstrual cycle and, at the appropriate time, she should know the signs of fertility within her cycle.
We will address her diet and why good nutrition is necessary to her growing, maturing body. We believe that education about diet, exercise and weight management is best started with a woman early in her life and that the standard healthcare system is not designed to meet this need.
Sexuality is a difficult topic for many parents to discuss but is a very significant part of growing up. We understand that we will find these young women at very different places in their maturation process and strive to provide appropriate counseling. We believe that by engaging clients at a younger age, we can have more positive influences on the beginning of their sexual life and the choices they will make. Our philosophy toward sexual activity at this stage in life is that it is healthiest for her to abstain from intercourse. We will discuss with your daughter why she might want to focus her energy on developing identity within herself and within her female friendships. In instances when our client is sexually active, we are able to prescribe birth control and discuss disease prevention.
